Designer of light spaces

Light is an integral part of architecture. It envelops space, differentiates volumes and surfaces and makes materials vibrate.

The perception of light is a profoundly human experience, based on the physiology of our eyes and our cerebral connections. Our visual perception is to some extent the result of our imagination. Yet, vision contributes to the majority of our perceptions and sensory stimulations.

Light plays essential roles in our lives. It needs to be functional at work, reassuring at night, stimulating during our leisure time, social when we get together, playful for our children, enhancing for our environment and heritage, and spiritual during moments of contemplation.

Light is particularly expressive in darkness. The balance between light and dark, the play of contrasts, the accents of light that makes sense, are the keys to mastering, transforming and sublimating our perception and our everyday experiences.

Giving life to our spaces and architecture, according to our uses and expectations, is the main objective that our lighting design practice seeks to achieve.

Bruno Demeester

Passionate about photography and architecture, he discovered early on the rich interactions between light and our environment. Photography allows him to capture the subtle variations of light at different times. Lighting design, on the other hand, offers him a palette with which to create and modulate them.

Bruno Demeester studied architecture in Brussels and lighting design in London. He pursued his training through varied and rewarding collaborations with companies such as Speirs & Major in London, Art & Build in Brussels, Ray Actif in France, with Jean-Pierre Majot in Brussels and Koert Vermeulen at ACT, where he was a partner for 8 years.

Ana Vargas Jaubert

With her experience as an architect in Costa Rica, Ana Vargas Jaubert has developed a deep fascination with the way light transforms space and perception. For her, lighting design is a dialogue between technique and emotion, a means of translating the character of architecture into atmosphere.

After working in architecture and then specialising in lighting design in Madrid, Ana Vargas Jaubert perfected her art through collaborations with ACTLD in Brussels, Wonderfulight in Bordeaux, and SENS interior design in San José.

She now collaborates with À Contre Jour, exploring the subtle and expressive language of light in architectural and artistic contexts.

A CONTRE JOUR

Founded in 2007, A CONTRE JOUR aims to bring to life Bruno Demeester's experience and process. The name A CONTRE JOUR enhances his expressive, stimulating and meaningful approach to light, and more specifically that light is revealed through contrast with darkness, the key to mastering and sublimating our living spaces.

A CONTRE JOUR relies on the expertise of Bruno Demeester and a network of freelancers to carry out the various tasks involved in a lighting project, such as 2D and 3D visualisations, photometric calculations, proposals for the most performing and efficient luminaires, the organisation of on-site lighting tests, the plans and technical specifications of the equipment to be installed and detailed on-site follow-up, especially during focus and programming.
